Peer Reflection

WEBSITE PEER EVALUATION:

Joudei:
7 overall- Well organized, could have been more of her work- using a video made by her. Could have varied between types of games, other than quizlets. Could have used more techniques like slideshows, images, or galleries.

Lyoma:
6 overall, need to add more activities and information, but very uniformed and well organized.
Racha:
7 overall, an informative website with all the required content for the correct target audience, could have been more innovative when choosing activities to make them more engaging.
Tanisha:
6 overall, a well set out website but the content was of a high level thus breaking the criteria. Could have made the videos with pronunciation herself to show technical skills.
Safiyah:

5 overall, website was well organized but she could include more information, she needs to make her games/activities more unique (one was clearly plagiarized by myself).

Criteria C-Gantt Chart

Gantt chart reflection:
Looking at my Gantt chart for the project i can see that my work was well laid out and i made sure to complete one thing before starting another. I also realized that i did some part of the project in class but a lot of it was based at home, and it was a very time taking project because as this chart show i worked after school on school nights and on weekends because i wanted to complete this to the best of my caliber. I think for this i took 20 hours all together which is very large, so i think to improve my organization further i should work more productively in the lessons as that would reduce the time i would work on this away from school. I think i was organized because when i came to lesson i had all my content in french ready in my books or from the internet so i didn't waste too much time. There were times in lessons when i had issues and i would have to restart something or watch a tutorial before doing it, this took time but it was worth it because the work i have produced was good. Over all i think i have spread my tasks through the time period effectively.

MORE CRITERIA A,B, AND C REFLECTIONS CAN BE FOUND ON THE OLDER PAGE BUTTON PAGE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BLOG

Criteria C- Week 5- 8 & 9 May

During these lessons, i finished one more page and did the final editing of the website. I finished the Months Page which had a marble slide, then the writing on a sub-page which was in the form of a slideshow with a picture, the name of the month in English and French and a festival to go with each month. Then the Video I made had the pronunciation of those months, and it was also embedded. The game I made was using Wix quizzes.

I also added final touches like fixing any links or changing the names of any thing that weren't accurate. Next week I intend on going and getting the website checked by my french teacher for linguistic mistakes and then to Ms. Veena for any comments and feedback that I could do before finally publishing it.

Criteria C-Week 4- 1 & 2 May

During this week I completed another two pages from my website, I finished the Members of the Family page. The main page was a marble gallery, The writing page was more innovative, this was a picture gallery with the name of the member and when the mouse was held over it, a picture showed up. This is very interactive and though it took time to edit it will add a very professional but creative aspect to the page. The pronunciation was a video exported externally and embedded, I had to trim and edit the volume and duration of this video before I uploaded it though. The game page was an Audio Comprehension, in this, i was talking about three people that described their families, the under it I inserted a quiz that had questions about the people.

The colours page was a little different, I included all 3 pages into one page, I first included a gallery with the colour then the English and french spelling. Under it I put a video that was embedded from outside, then under it I put another Quizlet that would allow many games, audio and flashcards. To insert it into the website i used the HTML code.

Scratch Codes

Following are examples of 1 of the codes i used to make the game:
THERE ARE MANY MORE THAN THESE

Criteria C- Week 3- 29&30 April

During this week I was able to complete two more main pages. The first one I completed was the numbers page. the main page again used the marble gallery with links, then the writing page consisted of tables with the numbers, these were images. Then a simple gallery with 3 images to add to the simple design, the images helped in adding color. The pronunciation was a video (not made by me) with an elaborate background to compliment the empty feel of the page. The game I decided to do was a quizlet. To make this I made a quizlet withs simple flashcards from french to English numbers, then when I produced it I found that with that one set of translations Quizlet made many games too. So I decided to embed this into my website usingHTML code options on Wix.

I also worked on the "Days Page", The main page again the same, then a writing page in which I used a sliding image gallery, and under it a column with the days in English and then in French. For the pronunciation, I made a video and recorded my voice at home then embedded it onto the website using the YouTube option. For the game I made a scratch, with a matching game, the codes are below. Then I made a small reading comprehension about activities that students do on each day and followed a Wix quiz about the paragraph.

SCRATCH GAME:

Criteria C- Week 2- 24 & 35 April

During this week I worked on 2 pages and finished the "About Page".
Finally, the About Page consisted of a video with famous places under the gallery, then a slide with pictures of famous french food and the names of the dishes on the other side.
TECHNIQUES USED IN ABOUT PAGE:
I used the slide, a gallery, a table, my own images, a video that was embedded ed by me using the "Video" option.
The About Page:

I also worked on the greetings page, and it's subpages. The page itself consisted of a marble slide with the main title, then the names of the sub pages and links to all of them. The techniques I used were a slide and linking to other pages. This was also edited in the navigation section

Navigation Menu:

The greetings page:

For the Writing of the greetings I used a different colored background, and columns as my technique, I played around with a lot of fonts too.
For the Pronunciation page, i made a video using a new app, then proceeded to put it on YouTube, then embedded it onto the website
For the Game page, i decided to make a quiz on Kahoot so the students can play using their phones or other devices as groups to provide motivation and competition, I then embedded this onto Wix using the HTML code.

Alphabet Pages:

Criteria C- Week 1- 17 & 18 April

During this week, from the French department, we were made aware of the new criteria which would require us to make more than two topics (as oppose to before when we did one or two). This meant that I had to re-plan the content for the website and that is what I did on the 17th. Following is the new layout that I intend to do:

I think that this lesson was very productive because I intended to adhere to this plan completely as it was very organized and thought through, I would like to make minimal changes to the layout when I work on the website and focus more on the content and design aspect.

During the second lesson of the week, I started to make the actual website, in this lesson, I could make the whole home page, the menu bar (navigation) and I started the about page. The home page I made consisted of a bag round of mountains, large black and bold font saying the title and a quote, I also included the title in French in a smaller and less bold font. This title is very clear thus following my specification. When I started the "About page" I made a large gallery, which had 3 colors, one talking about me and the website (purpose), then a picture of the Eiffel tower and the third column with the writing in French. This simplified the use of the website and tells the reader what he/she must do to use it.

Term 3- Making a Website- Criteria A &B

Criteria A:
Statement of Inquiry: Designers must consider the multiple cultural perspectives in communicating effectively by way of language to suit the need of the end users

Task: To create a Multi-language website

Target Audience: - Grade 7 Students

Global Context: Personal and Cultural Expression

Key Concept: Development

Related Concepts: Form and Perspective

ATL Skills:
Critical Thinking
Communication
Information Literacy

Introduction: I am a student of French, and have been learning it for 4 years. The topics we have covered in class lessons are colors, numbers, adjectives, compositions, phrases, descriptions, vocabulary, imperfect tense, past tense, present tense, members of the family and much more.

Answer these questions

What are the different types of web authoring software?
-Dream Weaver, Weebly, Wix, Word press, etc…

How are they beneficial to you as a student?
-They all make coding like HTML, C++ and java script easier to work with. They show the actual design product rather than relying on HTML coding skills only

Advantages of using at least two different types of software:
Wix presents everything easily in terms of design, much easier than HTML, we can embed external websites easily compared to Dream Weaver

Sample-I am going to be making a website using the website building tool WIX to explore my technology skills to the next level. This website would help grade sevens to improve their French vocabulary and their pronunciations and insight into the language.

Criteria B:

Reflection for criteria B

In detail explain how you went about it the way you sketched?

While sketching the pages for my website, I didn’t focus on the design aspect much yet, because as I have used Wix before, I have learned that the design ideas keep changing. I focused on how I wanted to lay out each page. My basic idea included a home and about page in which I would welcome the user to me, the language and the country. Then the following pages would be inclusive of the main topic and 3 sub-pages. The subpages would be the writing of the topic, then the pronunciation and then a game which would be made by me externally or are by me using a Wix app. I avoided putting in too much color or detail in the aesthetics because I would like to explore my options completely for various topics before I decide one definite idea. The lack of color is done on purpose and not because of time management.

Where would the user/target audience find your website?

I would like my target audience to be able to access my website through the URL on all search engines, personally I think this would work better as an app because the students can use this on a daily basis without wi-fi because sometimes there is the bad connection, etc.

How did you utilize your time in class doing the sketch?

I used two lessons to work on my sketch, in a part of the first lesson I used my time to write a basic plan of the activities I would need to use, this is when I came up with the 3 sub-pages. Then I used the rest of the time to work on the drawing, then I proceeded to take pictures and annotate them using Paint.

How good are the annotations/explanations?

I think my annotations are more practical and informative rather than aesthetically inclined I decided to make them like this to provide the viewer information on the features that I intend to use because the aesthetics can always be acted upon later. I think I was able to portray my ideas though my explanations so the person seeing the plans would know that the website is meant to be very practical (an example of where I showed this would be separate pages for everything so there is less scrolling. Also, my main design focus was how everything was supposed to be clear- the writing must always be readable).

What are the outstanding technological and content features that  you will be using in your design of the web page (like links, embedding video clips, sound clips, puzzles etc.)
Why do you think the features mentioned would be useful to beginners of the language?

In my website, I made sure to put in videos that I made myself, and quizzes, reading and audio comprehensions, Kahoots, and quizlets. These will be helpful for the beginners because people learn in different ways, some visually some by sound and others by writing; so, there is something for everyone. The videos would improve the pronunciation which is a major part of French and any language. The quizzes and games are involving and as the first page in my website will day "Tell me I’ll forget, teach me I’ll remember but involve me and I will learn" and this quote is something that I used as a base for my whole website. I wanted to make sure that the website would not have too many links so I made sure that I will use embedding instead of links.

Have you had a chance to ask any beginner of a new language if your sketch is good enough to proceed? If yes/no how and why do they think it is a useful sketch?

I did have a chance to ask someone older than me but a beginner and they said that my website would be very practical if everything worked as planned. They said that the content that I wanted to include will be important in business and otherwise environments and so they find it useful.

Criteria B- Design specification

Criteria B-Why I choose Wix?

For my project, this term I decided to use Wix because, after viewing and reflection on the other options available to me, this one seemed most creative and time efficient. I looked at DreamWeaver and tried to use it as well, using tutorials, but I decided not to use it because it will require lots of assistance and time which logistically and practically I don't have. I also tried to use Weebly but after trying to create more pages for my large content I realized that I can't use it because I can not insert more than 4 pages in. Because of my large amount of content I could not use it. So I decided to use Wix, this would allow me to finish on time, include as much content as required and add much more creative aspects to the website.

Term 3- Story Board

Task:
For this post out task was to create a plan, and complete story board, using the software called storyboard that. This story had to be based upon one of the learner profiles and along with this had to be funny and consist of a model. We had two lessons to complete all components of it.
Criteria B :
(to create the plan of a storyboard with annotations that has a learner profile, moral and humor)

For this storyboard, I have decided that the software I will use will be Storyboard That, this is not only a reliable recommendation of our teacher but is also used by many artists around the world. I choose this because the software has various options like characters, speech bubbles, titles, background and other features that apply directly to my annotated design. I think storyboard that will be able to help me portray the ideas I want to come across to my audience.

Criteria C:
(To create the storyboard based on criteria B demonstrating skills in digital design using various features of the tool)

Criteria D:
(To reflect upon the completed work- 400 words)
For this story board, I decided to pick the learner profile “caring”, I choose this as I was told to make it about one of the attributes that we can relate to, and personally I think I am caring. As my design states, I made a story about how I once was caring towards my brother even though he had done something bad. Through this I want to show that always do caring actions and do it without the greed to get something in return. From the design aspect, I made the background very colorful but realistic too. I choose to make my kitchen background basic but the room more innovative, I edited the original design’s colors to show my design skills. The text I choose was easy to read, as this is directed to a younger audience. I also avoided using complicated vocabulary as this is meant to be funny, but easy to understand like any comic strip. I think to improve I could make my story more complex but it would complicate things when I had to make it funny as that was one of the criteria’s. I also think that if I made more boxes then I would be able to demonstrate my skills further and show my abilities.

Over all I think I could make a successful storyboard that showed my idea, I think I followed the criteria well too. My annotations were appropriate and showed detail, and my project carried out my idea successfully. I think that next time to improve I will make more quantity as requested and I would also like to recreate this or a more complex story on another tool, and possibly compare the both to see which one is more effective.

As I have asked my peers (Maggie, Ananya and Kimberly), they have all told me that the learner profile is clear, per task and that my storyboard is fit for a younger audience than them. They have told me that to improve I could make the story a little more humorous but the current product is not so bad. They have also told me that next time I could make more textboxes to avoid the text heavy boxes under each design box.

Next time if I use another software I could try to do it manually, on word or paint which would give it a more original feel but it would not be able to provide the intricacy that Storyboard that has provided. I could use Adobe Photoshop for a more realistic aspect for an older target audience

Tech fair reflection- Criteria D

Peer Evaluation:

Self Evaluation:

Task:

  1. -Test against design brief
  2. -Strengths, weaknesses, improvements
  3. -Met the target audience's need?
  4. -How have I performed?
1)
2)
Strengths:
The app is able to help new students, it provides not only locations but subjects, emails and teachers in an easier way than using the homework diaries, will not take up space as it is online.
Weaknesses:
Needs wi-fi to work, does not completly navigate through the school so the student will need to find a route that will get them to class in time. If it is misinterpreted then the students could be late to class
Improvements:
Make it like a GPS so that the route is given when the name of the location is typed into a tab.

3)
I think that i have met the basic need of the target audience, as the new students will be aware of the locations around the school, they will also have the emails for projects and the teachers and subjects that they will need for finding new classes. Though it would have met the needs better by having an app that gives location when asked for it still meets the very basic requirements. I think it would have been better if it was an app as there would be no Wi-Fi required, and there would also be much more ease as the navigation would be performed by the app instead of the student. I think if the writing only showed up on the room once clicked, it would be more useful as the target audience would not be confused. As our target audience is new, they may not know the language and so if the language was changeable it would be more useful.

4)
Over the course of this term i think i have gained problem solving skills, we had aimed for completing a project that was very difficult and required a lot of time, and we had almost finished it but there were technical difficulties that made us make something different. I learnt how to use the app creator called "indoor atlas". I would have like to use android studio, and i tried as well but it was very complex to understand and as we only had limited time to make our project we decided to leave the android studio. Towards the end of the project i quickly learnt how to make a website, though i think i was basic and could be given ore detail i think we did a god job for a last minute project. I hope that next term i am able to make a more complex project and am able to attain more technical skills on the way.

Criteria C- Tech Fair

Task:
i    Logical plan (Gantt Chart/or any suitable chart)
ii   Demonstrate excellent technical skills when making the solution(Take pictures during the process and paste the pics on the document.)
iii  Explain changes made to the chosen design and the plan when making the solution.
iv  Present the solution as a whole.

Poster for project:

Strand i

Reflection for strand i:
This Gantt chart shows how I have worked over the course of the project, it shows how it took Ananya and I two days to plan and find applications suitable for our project and idea.  and at the same time, we were collecting data for the floors, it took time to gather information for the floors as we required data for each class and teacher, and due to blocked corridors we were missing some information. As it is shown it took us over 10 days to put in all of the information for our original app but we has to redo a website last minute before the due date. I think the work was spread out well and we would have finished before the due date if the app worked as intended in the end.

Strand ii:
Pictures of the process:

These pictures show us working on the original navigation app, the pictures demonstrate how we had to individually give each location and the data was saved on excel as a back up.

Strand iii
During our planning, we intended to make an app that would let students navigate through the school like the way an outdoor GPS would work, to do this we had made all our waypoints, corridors and possible routes on the maps of the school grounds, we could also provide information about the rooms and teachers, the project was going as per plan. But just as we were finished with all the information and were about to publish and release the app, there was a technical fault that did not let s fully create the app. So, 3 days before the due date we had to start again, we had lost of our data and had to come up with a backup plan, we decided to make a website. This website would include all the same information as we originally planned, but we were not able to put the option of navigation into the website. We tried to make this as like our intended project, and so we made it mobile friendly, like an app would be. As this would require wi-fi unlike the app we thought of letting the students take screenshots if they were not connected at all. When we started the app, we had decided to exclude the canteen menu and price list as we thought it was not as necessary as the teachers and room locations. Though we have created a product different from what we initially intended to, we hope it will still be useful for our target audience.
Strand iv:
Our product can be visited on the following link:
